Silkscreening, also known as screen printing or serigraphy, is a stencil-based printmaking technique where a mesh screen holds a design, and ink is forced through the unblocked areas of the screen onto a substrate, creating bold, flat-color prints. This process uses a stencil to block areas of a screen, which can be made of silk or, more commonly today, synthetic materials like polyester. A squeegee is then used to press ink through the open portions of the screen, transferring the image onto the material below.
Items that can be silk screened include textiles like T-shirts, hoodies, and tote bags, as well as paper and cardstock for posters and stationery. You can also apply the technique to other materials such as metal, plastic, wood, and glass for products ranging from labels and industrial components to home decor items like pillows and curtains.
